Wine cellar humidifiers: protect corks and labels
A wine cellar needs the right humidity as much as cool air. Cooling units remove moisture from the air, so in a well-insulated cellar the relative humidity can drop below the level that keeps corks supple. A wine cellar humidifier adds moisture back and holds it in the right range.
We offer humidifiers from Wine Guardian and WineMaster, designed to work with wine cellar cooling systems.
How to choose a wine cellar humidifier
Target humidity
Most cellars aim for 60 to 75 % relative humidity. Below 50 %, corks can dry out and wine evaporates faster; above 80 %, labels and wood suffer and mould can develop.
Size of the cellar
Compare the capacity given in the technical specifications with the volume of your cellar in m³ and with the cooling unit you use.
Standalone or ducted
A standalone humidifier sits in the cellar. A ducted humidifier connects to the cooling system and spreads humidity through the air supply.
Water supply and drain
Most cellar humidifiers need a water connection and, depending on the model, a drain. Plan these connections before installation.
Control
A humidity sensor or hygrostat switches the humidifier on and off to hold the set value. Check the control options with your cooling unit.
Humidity levels and their effect on wine
| Relative humidity | Effect on the wine |
|---|---|
| Below 50 % | Corks may dry out and evaporation increases |
| 60 to 75 % | Recommended range for wine storage |
| Above 80 % | Risk of mould and damaged labels and wood |

Wine cellar humidifier FAQ
Why does my wine cellar need a humidifier?
Because cooling dries the air. If your cellar stays below about 60 % relative humidity, a humidifier keeps corks supple and limits evaporation.
What humidity should a wine cellar have?
Around 60 to 75 % relative humidity is the usual target for long-term storage.
How do I measure the humidity in my cellar?
With a hygrometer or the humidity sensor of your climate system. Measure over several days, as humidity changes with the seasons.
Can I use a household humidifier?
It is not recommended. Cellar humidifiers are designed for cool temperatures and continuous operation, and they work with the climate control of the cellar.
Does a humidifier need a water connection?
Most cellar humidifiers are connected to the water supply and, depending on the model, to a drain. Check the installation requirements in the specifications.
Can a humidifier cause mould?
Not if it is correctly sized and controlled by a hygrostat. Mould comes from too much humidity or poor air circulation, which is why the set value matters.
Which humidifier for a Wine Guardian cooling unit?
Wine Guardian offers humidifiers designed to work with its cooling units. Send us your model and cellar volume and we will confirm the right one.
Do you install humidifiers?
Installation requires water and electrical connections. Contact us: we can advise you and organise the installation in Switzerland.
